The horse is the largest equestrian statue on earth, and the man riding it never sat for a portrait. No contemporary likeness of Temüjin survives. Every face carved, painted or cast since the thirteenth century is invention, and the one gazing east from Tsonjin Boldog is the most monumental invention of them all. The monument rises 40 metres above a low ridge in Erdene Soum, Tuv Province, roughly 54 kilometres from Ulaanbaatar. Sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal completed it in 2008, timed to the 800th anniversary of the Mongol state. Two hundred and fifty tonnes of stainless steel sheathe the figure.
